ENTRE ET VOIS, L’ENCRE EST VOIX. French Institute of Lisboa. 2014.

Not long ago, I had the opportunity to visit Lisboa for the third time. I always felt good in that country so I was happy to be invited to create a permanent installation in L’INSTITUT FRANÇAIS de LISBOA.

ENTRE ET VOIS, L'ENCRE EST VOIX.

While I was sipping some red wine, sitting at a table with a pen in the hand, I knew those words born on a napkin, would later speak on the wall.

“Enter and See, The matter is We. Here is present, the Essence. And You ? Between me and you, the Other me is You !

Where are You ?”

This happen while I was living in Alfama, 2 weeks in a beautiful and lightful neighborhood whose streets make you feel like you know that place. But when I first arrived …

The place was not like a virgin exhibition place, but more like a complete chaos. So once I accept the situation, I had to find a way to embrasse the full space in its global architecture. Because there was no large wall but only a multiplication of small surfaces of tight proportions.

So I choosed to do a poem. I choosed to write rather than to draw.

About the structure, I remembered I wanted to use the sides of the central patio, a square, in order to write 4 sentences. One on each side. Because of being a architectural cube, you could read it endlessly, like a Mantra.

“ENTRE ET VOIS , L’ENCRE EST VOIX. EST ANCRÉE LÀ, L’ESSENCE. ET TOI ? Entre et vois! L’encre est voix. Est ancrée là, L’essence. Et toi ? Entre, et vois…”

A translation could be “Enter and see ! The matter is We. Here is present, the Essence. And you !? Enter, and See ! the matter is We. Here is present, the Essence. And you !? Enter and See ! …”

The architecture of the building, apart from provoking the Mantra, invited me to create another association of words on the two larger sides of the room.

So I kept on the poem by playing with a mirror effect on those two opposite surfaces. On the left one, I wrote over the door : ” ENTRE MOI ET VOUS” (“Between You & Me”). If you turn back, you can read over the elevator “L’AUTRE MOI, C’EST VOUS!” (“The other me is You!”). And Finally, on the central reception desk, the message facing you is “OÙ ES TU ?” (“Where Are You?”).

The association of this three sentence create the following sequency :

“Between Me and You, The Other Me is You ! Where Are You !?”
