I’m blessed to travel a lot, and learn through those journeys. But it’s hard for me to write the story each time while it’s happening. So I usually take a day or two to write all at once, so that I can read it meanwhile I’m writing it. It’s easier to make the link between each step and then get a better understanding of what s going in my Life, or in My Art, which is almost the same…
L’ART, C’EST L’INTROSPECTION EXTRAVERTIE. spraypaint. 10x60m. 2013
Marseille, because of random (destiny?) factor, led me to bring the freestyle state to the next level, bigger in space, larger in time, heavier in materia.
The stranger I am wrote a 60m wide letter to the city starting with those words I found while living in Marrakech : “ART, IS THE EXTROVERTED INTROSPECTION ”
Like always, I went to Marseille free of expectatives or plans
I stayed more time than I needed in order to be able to live the city for a wide and get inspired by her. I went to the port, through the little streets, by the morroco neighborhood, to the cathedral and museums….and finally choosed to write instead of painting.
JE ME SOUVIENS QUE J’OUBLIE. Detail of the mural.
The predominant aspect I developped in that piece was the pleasure of the gesture, the dancing of the curve. I wanted to be fast, to enjoy each step for its creative side, for the process rather than the result, eventhough the global piece was considered in each of it’s unique letters. So I knew I would use a large tool, I choosed a spraycan with a fat cap which would allow me to be efficient, and very gestual.

But first I wrote on a paper quickly, too quickly – in a sort of confusing hurry – and while flowing on the glossy whiteness, the letters went out of alignement…which upset me at first, but I then added smaller calligraphic letters under or over the letters to correct the global rectangle. And I liked it, because it gives an organic dimension to something mecanical. I then developped a sort of code, inspired by this beautiful mistake.

As anyone who choosed to be an artist, I like to express myself. I like words. I like to receive (to feel) and I like to propose (to express).
So while sitting at the outside table of the restaurant, I took a napkin and start to write some words, a sort of letter i would write to a personified Marseille. I talked about doubt and temptations, about how one can pass from abstract to “real”, about the roots of one, about the travel, about unity, about life, about us.

The full text says : “L’ART, C’EST L’INTROSPECTION EXTRAVERTIE. J’AI EU PEUR D’OUBLIER POURQUOI JE PEINS. J’ECRIS ET JE ME SOUVIENS. ALORS JE SENS, DELORS J’AI TOUT MON TEMPS. MARSEILLE, JE TE VIS. DES A PRESENT, J’EXISTE EN CET (7) INSTANT.”

The translation would be : “Art, is the extroverted introspection. I’ve been afraid to forget why I paint. I write, then I remind. So I feel, thus time is unreal. Marseille, I live you. From now on, I exist in this instant”
Here are some more pictures of the process and result.

This large mural, around 65m wide, was separated in two parts because of water pilars. So, if I choosed to write on the left hand side, the right part of this image is more visual, or figurative eventhough it, as always, tends to abstraction.

It represent a sailorman, traveling on his boat, a wind flag in the hand. A tail fish grows from his head, in front of its sight, a lighthouse. Behind him, the moon eves.
